FT Columnist: Charlie Hebdo ‘Stupid’:

According to a columnist at the Financial Times, the French magazine that had its editor and cartoonists assassinated today was “stupid” for daring to insult Muslims. In a column posted on the same day that at least 12 people were killed at Charlie Hebdo’s office, Tony Barber wrote that the magazine exercised “editorial foolishness.” He went on: “If the magazine stops just short of outright insults, it is nevertheless not the most convincing champion of the principle of freedom of speech.” Of course, “this is not in the slightest to condone the murderers... it is merely to say that some common sense would be useful at publications... which purport to strike a blow for freedom when they provoke Muslims, but are actually just being stupid.”

Hannity Confronts British Imam on Paris Attack: ‘You’re Justifying This!’:

Anjem Choudary: Freedom of expression does not extend to insulting the Prophets of Allah, whatever your views on the events in Paris today! We must see what the honour of the Prophet means to Muslims after Salman Rushdie, Hirsi Ali, Theo Can Gogh & Terrance McNally. Muslims love the Messenger Muhammad (saw) more than their parents, children and even themselves! Why don't people understand?

People know the consequences: Opposing view:

So why in this case did the French government allow the magazine Charlie Hebdo to continue to provoke Muslims, thereby placing the sanctity of its citizens at risk?

It is time that the sanctity of a Prophet revered by up to one-quarter of the world's population was protected.

Sharpening Contradictions: Why al-Qaeda attacked Satirists in Paris:

The operatives who carried out this attack exhibit signs of professional training. They spoke unaccented French, and so certainly know that they are playing into the hands of Marine LePen and the Islamophobic French Right wing. They may have been French, but they appear to have been battle hardened. This horrific murder was not a pious protest against the defamation of a religious icon. It was an attempt to provoke European society into pogroms against French Muslims (...)

Catholic League President Bill Donohue on Charlie Hebdo: 'Muslims Are Right to Be Angry':

Bill Donohue, president of the Catholic League, blamed the horrific murders of a dozen employees of the French satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo on... Charlie Hebdo.

No, really.

"It is too bad that he didn’t understand the role he played in his tragic death," said Donohue of Stephane Charbonnier, Charlie Hebdo's publisher. "In 2012, when asked why he insults Muslims, he said, 'Muhammad isn’t sacred to me.' Had he not been so narcissistic, he may still be alive. Muhammad isn’t sacred to me, either, but it would never occur to me to deliberately insult Muslims by trashing him."

France faces rising tide of Islamophobia:

The success of Marine Le Pen, the far-Right Front National leader, has been the most visible sign of the rising tide of Islamophobia in France, which increased again in the wake of several attacks in December.

(...) The attacks were seen as a symptom of serious problems in French society, which has a large immigrant population from former French colonies including Algeria.

(...) There are concerns that racism is on the rise in France.

Howard Dean: Don’t Call Paris Attackers ‘Muslim Terrorists’:

Early Wednesday morning, when the news about a terrorist attack on satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo in Paris was first breaking, former Gov. Howard Dean (D-VT) immediately dismissed the idea that Islam would be to blame for the attack.

“I stopped calling these people Muslim terrorists,” Dean said on Morning Joe. ”They’re about as Muslim as I am.”

He also said he does not believe ISIS is an “Islamic cult” and thinks it would be unwise to “accord [the gunmen] any religious respect.”

New York Daily News pixelates Muhammad cartoon in story about Charlie Hebdo jihad massacre:

The free press is dying of a self-inflicted wound. Now is the time for every newspaper in the world to republish Charlie Hebdo’s cartoons of Muhammad, in solidarity with the jihad murder victims and as a show of defiance — a signal that we will protect free speech and free societies.

But this will not happen. Instead, watch for more pusillanimity, more temporizing, more denial that this had anything to do with Islam, and more calls for “respect” for “religious sensibilities” — i.e., the placement of Islam in a protected category, above criticism.
